What Is Parenting

Parenting as a series of decisions about socialization in children, which include what should be done by parents  so that children are able to be responsible and contributing members of society as well as what to do parent / caregiver when the child is crying, angry, lying, and not doing their duty properly. Parenting is a process of interaction that takes place constantly and affect not only the children but also for parents. Parenting can also be defined as a process refers to a series of actions and interactions of the parents to support the child's development. The process of care is not a one-way relationship in which parents influence children, but more than that, parenting is a process of interaction between parents and children are influenced by culture and social institutions in which children are raised.

Parenting is closely related to the ability of a family and community in terms of attention, time and support to meet the physical, mental, and social development of children who are growing as well as for other family members (ICN 1992 in Engel et al. 1997). Hoghughi (2004) states that care includes a variety of activities aimed at keeping children can develop optimally and can survive well. Principles of parenting not emphasis on who (actors), but more emphasis on the activities of the development and education of children. Therefore, care includes physical care, emotional care and social care.
Physical parenting includes all activities aimed at keeping children can thrive well by providing basic needs such as food, warmth, cleanliness, quietness of sleep, and satisfaction when throwing the rest of metabolism in the body. Parenting emotions when children experience includes mentoring events such unpleasant feeling alienated from his friends, fear, or trauma. This includes parenting emotions that children feel valued as an individual, knowing the sense of being loved, as well as the opportunity to make choices and to know the risks. Emotional nurturing is intended that the child has a stable and consistent ability to interact with its environment, creating a sense of security, as well as creating a sense of optimism over the new things that will be encountered by children. Meanwhile, social care aims that children do not feel alienated from the social environment that will affect the development of children in the later period. Social upbringing is very important because the social relationships that are built in the care will form the point of view of himself and his environment. Good social parenting focuses on providing assistance to children to be well integrated in the home or school and help teach the child will have a social responsibility upon him.
Some definitions of parenting shows that the concept of parenting include some basic understanding, among other things:
  • care aims to promote the growth and development of children optimally, both physically, mentally, and socially
  • parenting is a process of interaction continues constantly between parents and children
  • parenting is a process of socialization
  • as a process of interaction and socialization, the process of care can not be separated from the social culture in which children are raised.
